This BYRA Green Fleet Program is the sailing development component of our Build 2 Sail Program, supporting young sailors as they develop their sailing skills, confidence and independence on the water.
Following the boatbuilding and introductory Learn to Sail components of Build 2 Sail, participants progress into Green Fleet, where they continue developing their skills in a fun, inclusive and supportive club environment.
Following the Australian Sailing Green Fleet Coaching Program, sessions focus on practising fundamental sailing skills and introducing foundation racing skills through games, activities and on-water coaching, without a competition focus.
Sailing their Northbridge Junior (NJ) single-handed dinghies, participants will continue developing skills across boat handling, speed and sailing technique, rigging and equipment, launching and retrieving, capsize recovery, tacking and gybing, safety and awareness of the sailing environment.
Sailors will also be introduced to foundation racing skills while developing confidence, independence, decision-making, teamwork and an understanding of being part of the BYRA sailing community.
The emphasis is on enjoyment, participation, skill development and progression, allowing each sailor to develop at their own pace and become increasingly confident and independent on the water.
As their skills develop, sailors can progress from Green Fleet into BYRA's Intermediate Fleet and race training, providing a pathway towards confident participation in club racing and ongoing involvement in sailing.
For our Build 2 Sail sailors, Green Fleet is where everything comes together — taking the Northbridge Junior they have spent the winter building and developing the skills and confidence to sail it independently.
