BYRA's Holiday News - Touring, Hosting, Mothing and Winning!

Published Fri 31 Jan 2025

BYRA-ites don't stop just because the 'racing season' is finished. Between special events and members doing all sorts of cool things both here and overseas, read about just some of these fun adventures below.

BYRA Adventure Sail

Saturday 21st December seen a well-attended Adventure Sail launch from BYRA. The wind, however, did not launch itself until well into the event, and seen the fleet of Lasers, a Moth, an Envy and even a Corsair (once the team had manhandled its mast into place!) spread across Pittwater from Bayview to the adventure destination past Towlers Bay.

When we did eventually all re-group, we enjoyed a very pleasant picnic lunch and then decided on a race back home. This proved to be quite eventful, especially for the Corsair crewed by present and past Commodores that needed some innocent bystanders to tow them out of the trees from which they had plunged in an ill-timed tack. All quite hilarious, and much laughter ensued.

The good news is that, despite some boats adhering to the rounding buoy and some boats not bothering, all sailors safely arrived back at BYRA having had what can only be described as a jolly good time!

Look at all these smiling faces! That could be YOU next time!

56th Manly Junior Australian Championship

BYRA hosted the Manly Junior Australian Championship over the 28th - 30th December, and what an event this proved to be! The weather played ball, and the racing conditions were sublime! The perfect combination of wind and sun, along with a massive turnout of boats, resulted in a hugely successful event run by the Manly Junior Association in collaboration with BYRA. We made the clubhouse available and provided the start boat, some safety support, and the BYRA canteen over the full three days.

Feedback from this event has been extremely positive for BYRA, which will be hosting the Moth NSW State Championship in early March. Turns out we are a fantastic destination for major sailing events - our beautiful location and friendly team certainly help!

Thank you to all those BYRA-ites who volunteered at such a big event during their own Christmas break.

Check out these MINT sailing conditions, organised by BYRA of course...

Predict Wind Moth Worlds in New Zealand

New BYRA member Andrew Sim competed in the Moth Worlds in New Zealand at the close of December. This event is unbelievably exciting and seen Andrew compete against some of the world's top sailors in his amazing foiling moth-machine. Unfortunately, Andrew was hit with some gear failure, but for us non-foiling mortals, just competing is pretty amazing! Read all about the event in this Sail World article.

Ok, I admit, the Kiwis are not bad at sailing...

2025 Scow and Lowrider Moth National Championships

A number of our BYRA moth aficionados headed up to Saratoga for the 2025 Scow and Lowrider Moth National Championships held in early January. No foils this time! Or, at least not of the mechanical variety...

Indeed, Ian Ward, Ian Urban, and Paul Chudleigh all took to the water in their more 'traditional craft' to vie for a prize in changeable conditions. They fought hard, but ultimately left empty-handed.

Better luck next year boys!

Check out the Sail World article for the full story.

Not as exciting as the above picture, but to be fair, excitement is also relative to your age... ;-)

13' Skiff Success Continues for BYRA-ite Orlando Sadlik!

It seems that BYRA Youth Member Orlando Sadlik and his teammate Heidi Bates just can't stop winning! While the moths were going hammer and tongs in Saratoga, Orlando and his helm, Heidi, were cleaning up in Hervey Bay at the Australian 13ft Skiff Championship.

They won by a country mile! Check out the Sail World article for all the deets.

Well done Orlando, we could not be more proud of you!

Winners are grinners, but before that, full focus is required!
